Off for a wander...

A while ago I had some time to kill so went for a bit of a wander with my camera, near to the college where I teach there is wall where the local graffiti artists are allowed free reign to decorate the wall.
Here's a few images from that wall

When out and about try and shoot from a different angle, looks for shapes and colours

The things we do...

This is a shot under the Pier at Saltburn, the local council has fitted flood lights to the underside of the pier which come on at dusk and reflect off the water.
With this shot I wanted the water to be part of the image so I had to wade out a little way to get it, and got very wet feet, the main problem was that as the water came around me to made the sand very soft which meant that my tripod kept moving as the feet sank into the sand!

Right Place... Right Time

I have been asked how do I manage to get some of the moody landscapes that I shoot, its mostly luck to be honest, and keeping an eye on the weather forecast. I check this several times a day for a couple of days in advance and try and anticipate what the weather will bring as to the light.

This shot being a case in point, for example in the Autumn a still wind with a cold night will bring misty mornings especially in The Lake District, these 2 images were taken on the same morning about 20mins appart

This is Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick, the sun had yet to appear over the fells...

Then a quick dash to be beside Derwentwater as I knew that with such a still morning there would be mist over the lake, the red shades had gone from the sun by then but with this shot that didn't matter

Either of these as prints and greetings cards can be purchased from

Looking and Seeing ...

A friend informed me of this field of Sunflowers grown for their seeds for bird food so I thought that it had to be worth a shot.
.
I often tell my students that I can show you how your camera works, how to use the software and produce a print, but leaning to SEE is the hardest part.
.
With this shot I could see the "V" shape in the sky and deliberately placed the sunflower on the bottom of that "V", I then took hold of the sunflower and slightly turned it (and the 2 others facing the camera) so that we could see the front rather that the back knowing that the wide angle would lead your eye into the shot.

Bright and Sunny ... Not!

Sometimes as photographers we look for that "perfect" light, where everything is crisp and clear with blue sky's and white fluffy clouds, here in the UK that is quite rare and in Scotland even rarer.
I love taking photographs is challenging light as with this shot, the wind was howling lifting up the spray from the waterfall which meant that I had to wipe down the filters every few seconds, and then it rained!

Its funny tho, this is one of my best selling images!
